FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Izinganekwane Zika Gogo: Pekwa no Nogwaja

A Celebration of African Folklore Through Animation and Education

Johannesburg, South Africa - Izinganekwane Zika Gogo: Pekwa no Nogwaja is an enchanting animated pilot film inspired by beloved African folktales traditionally passed down through generations by grandmothers. Rooted in South African cultural heritage, the project blends the warmth of oral storytelling with the visual artistry of modern 2D animation, creating a meaningful and engaging experience for young audiences.

The film brings to life the timeless tale of Pekwa no Nogwaja, a story that explores themes of friendship, cleverness, and betrayal. Through humour and moral lessons, the narrative offers both entertainment and educational value, encouraging children to think critically about values, choices, and consequences.

Designed specifically for primary school audiences, the pilot film will be screened in school environments, ensuring accessibility and comfort for learners. Each screening forms part of a broader educational programme that includes interactive pre- and post-screening discussions facilitated by the filmmaker, cast members, and panelists from the production team. These sessions invite learners to reflect on the story, ask questions, and gain insight into the creative process behind animation and filmmaking.

To further enrich the experience, every student will receive a Screening Handbook featuring guided reflection exercises and a writing challenge aimed at reinforcing the film’s themes and lessons. The programme recognises cinema as a powerful educational tool—one that nurtures imagination, empathy, moral development, and creative expression.

Developed by Cheers To The Leaders, Izinganekwane Zika Gogo seeks to demonstrate that film is not only a source of entertainment, but also a dynamic medium for learning, emotional expression, and cultural preservation. The initiative is proudly supported by the Gauteng Film Commission and the City of Joburg, reflecting a shared commitment to arts education, youth development, and the preservation of African storytelling traditions through film.
